West Virginia drubs Clemson 70-33 in Orange Bowl (AP)

MIAMI ? As the West Virginia Mountaineers celebrated their first Orange Bowl victory, safety Darwin Cook shared a hug with the game's mascot, Obie.

They had run into each other earlier in the end zone when Cook scored the night's pivotal touchdown, then leaped on the smiling orange. Only after the game did he learn a woman was wearing the Obie outfit.

"I didn't know you were a girl," he told her. "I apologize."

The Mountaineers ran over everything in their path Wednesday night, including the Clemson Tigers. Geno Smith tied the record for any bowl game with six touchdown passes, and the No. 23-ranked Mountaineers set a bowl scoring record with their high-powered offense by routing No. 14 Clemson 70-33.

But it was a defensive player ? Cook ? who made the most memorable play by returning a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown to break the game open.

Standing in the sideline, Smith watched a video replay of Cook's touchdown in disbelief.

"Crazy, man," Smith said. "When I saw that, I knew things were breaking our way."

Cook collided comically with mascot Obie after scoring one of the Mountaineers' five TDs in the second quarter, including three in the final 2:29 for a 49-20 lead. It was the highest-scoring half by a team in a bowl game.

"I always envisioned making great plays," Cook said. "If you think it will happen, it will happen."

Tavon Austin tied a record for any bowl game with four touchdown catches. Smith went 31 for 42 and had 401 yards passing to break Tom Brady's Orange Bowl record. Smith also ran for a score, helping West Virginia break the bowl record for points established six nights earlier when Baylor beat Washington 67-56 in the Alamo Bowl.

"Never could we imagine we'd put up 70 points," Smith said.

"It was like a virus," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said.

The Mountaineers (10-3) won in their first Orange Bowl appearance and improved to 3-0 in Bowl Championship Series games.

"Our guys felt like they weren't getting too much credit," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. "And they wanted to make a statement in this game."

Clemson (10-4) lost playing in its first major bowl in 30 years. Despite the drubbing, Swinney said, the wait for a return trip won't be so long.

"It won't be 30 years," Swinney said. "We'll be back."

The offensive showcase was the latest in a succession this bowl season, and perhaps the last. Defense is expected to dominate in the final BCS game Monday night, when Louisiana State faces Alabama for the national title.

West Virginia totaled 589 yards and 31 first downs. Smith was chosen the game's outstanding player but gave Austin an assist.

"He won me an MVP," Smith said. "He's one of the quickest guys I've ever seen, and it's just a blessing to have a guy like him on my team."

Austin had 11 receptions, scoring on passes of 8, 27, 3 and 37 yards.

"I do know who the fastest kid on the field was," Holgorsen said. "We made a conscious effort to get him the ball a bunch, and whenever we got him the ball, he made things happen."

Clemson couldn't keep up with the Big East Conference co-champions, although Andre Ellington did score the game's first points on a 68-yard run. First-team All-Americans Sammy Watkins and Dwayne Allen combined for only seven catches for 87 yards.

"We didn't play too good," Watkins said. "We've got the whole next year to get right."

Amid the flurry of points, defensive back Cook came up with second-longest play in Orange Bowl history.

Clemson was on the verge of taking the lead in the second quarter when Ellington ran up the middle and disappeared into a heap at the 1. A teammate signaled touchdown, but the ball came loose and Cook grabbed it, then took off with nothing but the end zone in front of him.

"Cook was the only one in the stadium who knew the ball was out," teammate Bruce Irvin said. "That was a heads-up play."

The potential 14-point swing seemed to deflate the Tigers, who had moved the ball almost at will to that point.

"They hadn't really stopped us," Swinney said. "That was huge. Then it snowballed quickly."

The Tigers were doomed when quarterback Tajh Boyd committed turnovers on consecutive Clemson plays.

After Smith ran 7 yards on a keeper for a 35-20 lead, Pat Miller intercepted Boyd's pass. Smith flipped a 1-yard touchdown pass to Austin and, on the next play a call was overturned, with the replay official determining Boyd had lost a fumble.

Alston then ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 4 seconds left in the half.

"Momentum swung not in our favor, and it was hard to recapture," Boyd said. "West Virginia is a great offense. You can't really get behind them. We couldn't stop them. Guys were gassed. Their legs were going. It was a tough loss ? pretty embarrassing."

Saudi hacker steps up campaign against Israel, calls it payback

Hacker

REPORTING FROM JERUSALEM -- Earlier this week, a computer hacker broke into an Israeli sports?website?and redirected viewers to a page linking to a file claiming to contain personal and credit card details of 400,000 Israelis.?Credit card companies said the lists actually compromised about?15,000 valid credit cards, and?the Bank of Israel announced the situation was under control.

But? authorities considered it a wake-up call. And?Tuesday's assault on credit card numbers?may be just the tip of the iceberg.

Angered?that Israeli media belittled his handiwork, the person claiming responsibility for the hack?released another?11,000 card numbers?and, in a post, said there are a lot more --?about 1 million?sets of numbers.

And the hacker claims to have?more surprises, too,?including documents from military contractors and the makers of surveillance equipment.

In an online statement, the hacker calls himself OxOmar. He?says he is 19, based in?Riyadh and claims to belong to a group named Group-XP, the "greatest Saudi Arabian hacking team."

"It's a payback," OxOmar wrote in an email interview to the popular Israeli news site Ynet. "Israel attacks and kills innocent Palestinian people; they do genocide," he said. He intends?to "harm Israel for now financially and socially by creating long queues, and crisis and panic."

?Yoram Hacohen, director of the Israeli Law, Information and Technology Authority, has told Israel media that?this case should be regarded as a cyber attack.

?The Saudi teenager says he broke into more than 80 sites to gather information.?Now?many online shopping sites are reporting a 25% drop in?business.???

Israel's government announced the establishment of a National Cyber Directorate last summer after a malfunction at?a cellular phone carrier cut service to?nearly a third of the country, giving authorities a preview of what a real cyber terrorist attack on critical infrastructure could look like.?The directorate is?not operational yet.

The Knesset's Science and Technology Committee?will hold an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss the cyber attacks. Lawmaker Ronit Tirosh, who heads the committee,?said?Israel must prepare for cyber threats and "stay ahead of those trying to use?Internet-terror against Israel."

Why people choose running over walking

ScienceDaily (Jan. 5, 2012) ? Other than Olympic race walkers, people generally find it more comfortable to run than walk when they start moving at around 2 meters per second -- about 4.5 miles per hour.

North Carolina State University biomedical engineers Dr. Gregory Sawicki and Dr. Dominic Farris have discovered why: At 2 meters per second, running makes better use of an important calf muscle than walking, and therefore is a much more efficient use of the muscle's -- and the body's -- energy.

Published online this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the results stem from a first-of-its-kind study combining ultrasound imaging, high-speed motion-capture techniques and a force-measuring treadmill to examine a key calf muscle and how it behaves when people walk and run.

The study used ultrasound imaging in a unique way: A small ultrasound probe fastened to the back of the leg showed in real time the adjustments made by the muscle as study subjects walked and ran at various speeds.

The high-speed images revealed that the medial gastrocnemius muscle, a major calf muscle that attaches to the Achilles tendon, can be likened to a "clutch" that engages early in the stride, holding one end of the tendon while the body's energy is transferred to stretch it. Later, the Achilles -- the long, elastic tendon that runs down the back of the lower leg -- springs into action by releasing the stored energy in a rapid recoil to help move you.

The study showed that the muscle "speeds up," or changes its length more and more rapidly as people walk faster and faster, but in doing so provides less and less power. Working harder and providing less power means less overall muscle efficiency.

When people break into a run at about 2 meters per second, however, the study showed that the muscle "slows down," or changes its length more slowly, providing more power while working less rigorously, thereby increasing its efficiency.

"The ultrasound imaging technique allows you to separate out the movement of the muscles in the lower leg and has not been used before in this context," Farris says.

The finding sheds light on why speed walking is generally confined to the Olympics: muscles must work too inefficiently to speed walk, so the body turns to running in order to increase efficiency and comfort, and to conserve energy.

"The muscle can't catch up to the speed of the gait as you walk faster and faster," Sawicki says. "But when you shift the gait and transition from a walk to a run, that same muscle becomes almost static and doesn't seem to change its behavior very much as you run faster and faster, although we didn't test the muscle at sprinting rates."

The research could help inform the best ways of building assistive or prosthetic devices for humans, or help strength and conditioning professionals assist people who have had spinal-cord injury or a stroke, Sawicki and Farris say.

The researchers are part of NC State's Human PoWeR (Physiology of Wearable Robotics) Lab, directed by Sawicki. The joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is part of NC State's College of Engineering and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's School of Medicine.

Ford Unveils Compact SUV, Tiny Engine in India

Ford Motor Co. introduced a new compact SUV called the EcoSport in India. The car maker is also using the vehicle?s launch as a platform for?the debut of its newest and smallest EcoBoost engine.

The new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine uses turbocharging to generate about 120 horsepower. Ford says the tiny motor?s overall?performance is roughly equal to that of a traditional 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. While a 1.6-liter displacement seems small for a?car engine in the U.S., it?represents a sweet spot in many global?markets including India.

The EcoSport is designed to take up as little space as possible and be easy to maneuver and park in congested urban settings. But the turbocharged engine is meant to give it enough power to travel comfortably on longer, faster trips outside the city.

In time, the 1.0-liter engine will be available on Ford vehicles sold in Europe, China and?North America. Ford said it will gradually roll out the?EcoSport SUV in 100 countries.

Ford is increasingly betting on its EcoBoost engines to differentiate its vehicles from rival products.?The engines, which are as large as 3.5 liters, use turbochargers, direct fuel injection and other?technology to match the power of larger engines while improving fuel economy.

Praise and pans for Mayor Rob Ford

Most people who attended the annual New Year?s Levee hosted by Mayor Rob Ford on Monday were there to shake his hand and say well done, although the event was twice interrupted by protesters railing against budget cuts. Here?s what four Torontonians had to say about the love-him-or-hate-him mayor:

More related to this story

Doug Mitchell, North York

?I?m here to congratulate the mayor, keep up the good job and run the city the way he is. He should run the city like a business ? trim the fat ? increase user fees. People have to work for what they want so they appreciate it more.?

Moe Levin, downtown, until leaving for school

?I think his controversy is really detrimental to Toronto. We haven?t had a mayor that?s so controversial in the past, and it?s almost as if he celebrates his mediocrity as a mayor ? [the population] is sort of diametrically opposed, the attitude of people in Toronto and the people in the suburbs.?

Ken Street, Etobicoke

?I like lots about [Rob Ford]. I?m not disappointed. Nobody?s perfect. ? I think everybody should be accountable for what they say and for what they spend. People have got to be accountable.?

Andrew Jones, Etobicoke

?I?m going to shake his hand and maybe get a picture. I?ve got a picture of his niece Krista Ford with me and hopefully he can sign that.?

While Republicans battle, Obama never far away in Iowa (Reuters)

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) ? While Republican presidential candidates dominate headlines in Iowa with their caucus quest, President Barack Obama's Democrats have quietly built a massive organizational structure to round up voters and win the state in November's general election.

Thousands of Democratic volunteers have mobilized across Iowa to garner support for Obama, who used the state as his launching pad for a White House victory four years ago.

The president may need that organizational advantage.

Iowa is considered a battleground state that could swing to either side, and Republican candidates have been wooing voters one-on-one here for months if not years, generating media coverage and public attention for their cause.

Obama's volunteer army has worked to offset those headlines with a quiet, on-the-ground apparatus to get out the vote. They opened eight campaign offices across the state and made more than 350,000 calls to supporters, officials said.

"Come Wednesday morning, no matter who wins the Republican race, we will have the best organization," said Tyler Olson, 35, a state representative who is campaigning for Obama.

"And we'll continue to build on it while the Republican candidates go around the country and keep battling it out."

Part of building that structure involves luring Democrats on Tuesday to their Iowa caucuses, where voters typically express support for candidates and causes.

This year the Democratic candidate -- Obama -- is already chosen, but the campaign wants supporters to turn out anyway as a sign of organizational support.

"Obviously, the celebrity is on the Republican side, and people I've called today didn't even know the Democrats were even going to have a caucus," said Leni Stastny, 63, a retired insurance worker who was volunteering at a call center in Cedar Rapids.

"I've got a lot of people (on the phone) that were going. And some people hung up on me. And some people didn't want anything to do with it. And some people were really mad at Obama because of ... healthcare (reform)."

Republicans will seek to exploit that anger among Obama's supporters, organizational advantages or not.

"The president's team is boasting about its organization in Iowa but the reality is Obama's going to need it," said Kirsten Kukowski, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

"Iowa today is completely different than the state that launched him to the presidency four years ago. The so-called spark is gone in Iowa for President Obama."

GETTING ATTENTION

Obama's supporters are trying to get that spark back.

At the call center in Cedar Rapids, volunteers ranging from their late teens to their late sixties use cell phones to dial up long lists of Democrats in their neighborhoods. Obama campaign signs decorate the walls and windows, and a large statue of a donkey -- the symbol of the Democratic party -- greets visitors when they walk in.

"In essence, the Obama organization never left," said Peggy Whitworth, 69, a neighborhood "team leader" for the president in Iowa. "There's been this staying connected to people who were involved the first time around."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said the Iowa operation was representative of a nationwide grassroots organizing push, which it hopes will create a strategic advantage for the president in November.

"It's indicative of the type of unrivaled organizations we've built across the country," he said.

But some supporters worry that the strong Republican presence in Iowa has drowned out Obama's message.

"I haven't seen anything from Obama this year, it's all been Republican," said Wind Goodfriend, an author and Obama supporter, while walking her dogs in the town of Storm Lake.

"I think in some ways (the campaign is) probably waiting to decide what strategy based on who the Republican nominee is, but I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that no attention has gone to Obama," she said.

Whitworth said Obama's presence or visibility would increase.

"Some people see the presence as lots of bumper stickers and lots of yard signs. Yard signs don't vote, you know?" she said, noting that the "thrifty" Obama campaign has been careful about how much money it wants to spend on such things.

"We will continue to be more and more visible. We've certainly been visible in the last several weeks," she said.

Obama will address a group of Iowa caucus-goers from a hotel in Washington on Wednesday, adding his voice to a scene that will otherwise be drowned out by intrigue over who wins the first Republican nominating contest in the country.

The president will travel to Iowa to campaign in person, too, though his campaign declined to say when his first trip this year would take place.

He has a reason to come often: among five nationwide state-by-state scenarios that Obama campaign manager Jim Messina has designed for victory in 2012, three of them include winning Iowa.

Mexico says arrests weapons chief for drug cartel

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico on Saturday said that it had arrested a leading weapons smuggler for one of the largest drug cartels.

Ramiro Rendon Rivera, a key distributor of firearms for the Sinaloa Cartel lead by Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, was arrested on Friday, the army said in a statement.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon's campaign to curb violent drug cartels has left more than 46,000 people dead since he took office in 2006.

Mexican authorities have in the last several months apprehended several lieutenants of Guzman, the country's most-wanted man.

Katy Perry And Russell Brand: A Timeline

We take a look back at the divorcing couple's whirlwind relationship and rumor-plagued marriage.
By John Mitchell

Katy Perry and Russell Brand
Photo: George Pimentel/ Getty Images

Fans of Katy Perry and Russell Brand were sad to hear Friday that the Gammy-nominated pop star and her actor/comedian husband were divorcing after just 14 months of marriage. Theirs was a whirlwind romance: They were engaged less than four months after they started dating, were married 10 months later in an elaborate ceremony in India, and now, after months of endless baby and breakup rumors, are parting ways.

"Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage," Brand said in a statement. "I will always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."

Like so many Hollywood couples before them, their flame burned hot and fast. Here's a look back at the many milestone moments in Perry and Brand's relationship.

September 7, 2008: Brand met Perry when he was hosting the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. "Get Him to the Greek" director Nick Stoller set up a shoot at the VMAs to snag some fun celebrity cameos for the film, in which the British comedian stars. Stoller lined up Christina Aguilera, Pink and Perry, who had immediate chemistry with Brand. Later, following Perry's performance of "I Kissed a Girl" at the VMAs, Brand joked, "I was so inspired by Katy Perry's song's message that I'm currently going through nine ChapSticks a day and my penis has never felt more moisturized." There was only one problem: Perry wasn't single — she was still dating Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy.

September 13, 2009: A year later, at the 2009 VMAs, however, was a very different story. Perry and McCoy had parted ways, and longtime ladies' man Brand, who was back for his second time as host, was single as well when both returned to the VMA stage. They flirted their way through rehearsals for the show, and rumors that they were an item began soon thereafter.

October 7, 2009: Though things reportedly got hot and heavy pretty quickly after the VMAs, Perry and Brand were not spotted together publicly for nearly three weeks, making their debut as a couple at a Fendi party at Paris Fashion Week.

December 31, 2009: On an extended holiday vacation, Brand proposed on New Year's Eve at a tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, and Perry said yes. A week earlier, while visiting the Taj Mahal, she tweeted, "He built this for me. So when do I start walking the streets naked singing that Alanis song?" (meaning "Thank U," about time Alanis Morissette spent in India).

August 2010: Talking to Rolling Stone while promoting her multiplatinum, hit-machine record Teenage Dream, Perry admitted her religious upbringing sometimes caused conflict between herself and Brand. "I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord's name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth," she told the mag. "I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen."

October 23, 2010: Perry and Brand get married in an elaborate ceremony at the Aman-i-Khas luxury resort in India, adjacent to the tiger sanctuary where he proposed. The wedding capped off days of festivities in the couple's honor, including a Bollywood-themed party and tours of the sanctuary. "Russell Brand and Katy Perry are overjoyed to confirm that they were pronounced Mr. and Mrs. Brand on Saturday, October 23," the couple said in a statement to MTV News. "The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couples' closest family and friends, was performed by a Christian minister and longtime friend of the Hudson Family [Katy's maiden name]. The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of Northern India."

November 11, 2011: Appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to tout the end of her successful California Dreams Tour, Perry told DeGeneres she wanted kids with Russell. "I would love to have children. "But I'm not sure it's yet. We'll see, you know?" During the sit-down, she admitted that she and Brand worked hard to see each other while she was on tour but that it was often a challenge. "Two weeks, that's the longest we ever go. Anything longer than that is not fun."

November 22, 2011: On the heels of taking home a special award for having scored five #1 singles from one album (Teenage Dream) at the American Music Awards, Perry was forced to respond to fashionistas claiming she was sporting a small baby bump under her pink dress, telling Hollyscoop, "Hell no!" when asked if children were in her near future.

Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge."
